Everything in Nature has character; the sun can be harsh and destructive in times of drought, or gentle and loving on the first warm day of spring, the wind can rend and tear with the force of a hurricane, or gently caress and carry with it the crisp scent of the first frost. Rain has character, too; from monsoons to light summer showers, rain has as many faces as any other natural phenomenon. The rain was soft and cool, the day my life fell apart -- there wasn't enough to wash away the blood, or even camouflage my tears. Standing here now, I find I can remember the touch of the rain on my face more clearly than I can the sound of your last breath, or the feel of you going cold and still in my arms. In the space of a few short decades, even a gentle spring rain can wash away the painful memories. |
